Testing: Success!
Project Weather Eye Update: RDD Progress, Severe Weather, and Big Goals Ahead!
March 12, 2025
Today’s been another step forward for us here at ProjectWeatherEye. We built another Rapid Deployment Device (RDD) and recorded the process. You can expect a video in the next few days, time permitting. Severe storms rolling in this Friday and Saturday are throwing a wrench in our editing schedule (and general progress), so bear with us as we balance chaos and our mission.
Speaking of today, we ran a test with two RDDs, and is working as expected. That said, we’ve got some back-end cloud infrastructure upgrades on the very near horizon. We’re planning to handle those once this round of severe weather passes. With our cloud setup and stream endpoints now in place, we’re inching extremely close to being 100% operational. It’s been a long road, but we’re almost there!
Now that we’ve got the infrastructure sorted, we’re ready to take things up a notch. Our next RDD build is going live-- we’re inviting you to join us for a livestream where we’ll assemble it together. We held off on this until recently because we didn’t have a way to test it on the stream, but that’s no longer an issue. The plan: post the build video from today before the severe weather hits later this week (fingers crossed), then start off the live RDD build early next week.
Looking Ahead: Our April 10th Goal
Thanks for following along on this journey—it means the world to us. Let’s set a goal: full deployability by April 10th. What does that mean? We’re aiming for a minimum equipment lineup to tackle any weather event that comes our way. Here’s the breakdown:
Rapid Deployment Devices (RDDs): 6 units for ad-hoc, short-term severe events—think tornadoes, hail cores, stunning timelapses, and floods.
Tornado Strike Units (TSUs): 4 units built tough for direct tornado impacts.
Endurance Units: 3 units designed for long-haul events (36-48 hours of streaming), like blizzards and lake-effect snow.
That’s our *minimum*—we’re planning way bigger than that. Every device brings us closer to capturing the raw power of weather in real-time, and we couldn’t do it without your support
How You Can Help
Want to get hands-on with Project Weather Eye? You can help us build by checking out our Amazon list and grabbing some of the supplies we need. They’ll show up right at our door, ready to be put to work. Click here to support us: https://tinyurl.com/mw98ey37. Every little bit gets us closer to that April 10th goal.
Thanks for riding this storm-chasing, tech-building adventure with us. Keep an eye out for that video, join us for the livestream, and let’s make Project Weather Eye fully operational together!
